Attleboro Public Schools Music Department Mission Statement
The mission of the Attleboro Public Schools Music Department is to provide a diverse and rigorous education in the field of music. Students will acquire knowledge of core concepts, experience and perform works of music, and demonstrate personal expression so that they may enter the global community as an informed consumer and lifelong learner in music.
· All students are entitled to a challenging and sequential music curricula in grades K-12 taught by a highly qualified faculty. The music curricula include offerings in choral, general, and instrumental music, including performance ensembles and classroom music.
· All students are entitled to equitable opportunities during the regular school day to develop their skills and experience in music in all grades K-12.
· Music is a performing art. In order to offer a complete and well-structured course of study, students must have equitable opportunities, during the school day, to participate in performing ensembles.
· An education in music provides students with unique opportunities for personal growth and social development, and increases student investment in school. It also promotes cultural understanding and appreciation through performance, analysis and evaluation of music from different cultures and countries around the world.
· Through music education, students engage in a precise and highly intellectual pursuit. Students become sensitive to relationships, proportions, and patterns. Students read and decode symbols, as well as coordinate their gross and fine motor skills according to what they see and hear. Students analyze, compose, and perform. Music has its own vast body of literature, a rich history, its own technologies, and strong cultural connections. For these reasons, and many more, the study of music is a rich, complex, and rigorous field of study.
